There is a disconnect in my brain - maybe I have too short of an attention span - but I just don't see how anyone can actually listen to a song that is twenty minutes. Even in genres I love if we start to top six minutes, I'm antsy and ready to see what's next. That and my distaste for growling lyrics really does leave so much 'underground' metal off limits too me. But enough of that and now to what I like.
Musically I appreciated Morgion, there was just a disconnect of my enjoyment due to the vocals.
The song by Nadja - made me very uncomfortable, but in a good way. It really did seem very effective even if I found myself growing bored a little over halfway through. I really enjoyed individual parts (the area around 12:40-14:10), its just hard for me to focus on the full piece.
Northwinds actually had some great composition in their solos - its rare for me to not find most solos to be ego wank-fests but these I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed the vocalists voice which was pleasant in itself.
Devoid of all Mercy was very pleasant in an ambient track sort of way. The sort of thing I have actually had commissioned before for my last short film...
Pantheist is probably my happy surprise from this pack. The growly vocals are mixed back enough (or else I just adore everything else enough) that they couldn't prevent me from enjoying the rest of the song quite a bit.
...see this is the problem with writing these comments as I'm listening to the tracks. Again, barring the vocals, Indesinence is rather brilliant.
Lurker of Chalice is rather nice, evocative but.. again drags for my tastes. Just a genre I fear I shall never have the proper appreciation for.
