Dogmatics

A Boston-based alternative band, the Dogmatics never saw any significant or even minor success. They only released 2 albums on Homestead, and one self-released single.

The band was formed by brotehrs Peter (vocals) and Paul (bass) O'Halloran, and lifelong friend Jerry Lehane (guitar), as well as 2 different drummers in their five year career, Tommy Long the most notable as he played on all of the bands released material.

While the band had some influence over the Boston alternative scene, their career was cut short when Paul died in a motorcycle accident. The band broke-up, and became all but forgotten over the years.

They could be characterized by their strong wit, introspective lyrics, and noted rockabilly and hardcore punk influences. Here's a track listing for the mix:

1. Sister Serena
2. Mtv O.D.
3. King Size Cigarette
4. Gimme the Shakes
5. Pussy Whipped
6. Teenage Lament
7. Saturday Night Again
8. Drinking By the Pool
9. Thayer St.
10. Tell Me
11. Rockabilly Ramble
12. Sex Bomb

Post-Punk Mix

Becoming the first major spin-off from punk, post-punk was more experimental in nature than it's predecessor. For a few years, the terms new wave and post-punk were semi-interchangeable, but both developed into their own unique style, though there was some overlap. The first bands that could be described as definitively post-punk in sound were bands like Television, Magazine, and The Pop Group. Other bands that were once part of the movement headed for the more commercial friendly new wave sound, like Talking Heads and Devo. All of these bands laid the groundwork for alternative rock, and many of them were later considered to be the first alt. groups.

Here's a track listing:
1. Gimme the Shakes by Dogmatics
2. Transmission by Joy Division
3. Definitive Gaze by Magazine
4. Blow Daddy-O by Pere Ubu
5. Swamp Thing by The Chameleons
6. Elizabeth Montgomery's Face by The Embarrassment
7. Loveless Love by The Feelies
8. She Is Beyond Good and Evil by The Pop Group
9. Old Pervert by The Soft Boys
10. Descent Into Hell by Volcano Suns

Gorguts compliation.

"Gorguts brought the initial phases of death metal toward a greater realization of melodic structuring before it was conventional to do so renovate the genre again with the innovation of a new form of chaotic yet lucid composition.

Gorguts is avant-garde/technical metal band from Quebec, a city that brought us other death metal ledgends Cryptopsy and progressive thrashers Voivod. Although Gorguts started out as old school death metal act they would later, tired of the cliche and cookie cutter death metal acts at the time evolve into a highly technical, highly avant-garde and dissonant technincal metal with a completly unique style that fused the death/jazz fusion of Atheist and Cynic with Suffocation and Cryptopsy with free jazz and composers like Penderecki.

In 1998 Gorguts released their magnum opus,
Obscura.
A metal album like no other. Labeled as the Trout Mask Relipca of death metal due to its "High speed counterpoint baffling chord structures buttressed by recursion, tonal centering through droning cyclic melted sound emergence, ragged fugues of dissonant melodies converging toward oblivion, tempos shifting through the elements of one another into each other, cyclic two-hit metal percussive structures and free-form progressive harmonic jamming are packed into these songs as overhead to the essence of each, which no matter how aesthetically different it appears at first listen reveals itself as fundamental Gorguts when the emergent melody encoded within begins to find form in the various aspects of its decomposition showcased by differentiation structures creating a vast tonal motion in their evolutionary journey from the point of chaos to clarity. The same voice that crafted the strength within the sturdy structures of death metal on two previous albums speaks through the chaos on this release with a newfound power in its ability to fuse what to most will seem like a salad of riffs juxtaposed for their difference rather than similarity."

In 2001 Gorguts released
From Widsom To Hate. Still avant-garde but more "straight-forward" than Obscura it earned Gorguts more fans with your average death-metaller but was undoubtedly a step down from Obscura. This compilation contains some of my favourite Gorguts tracks. I recommend the Obscura tracks and "Inverted"listen if you dare, at first you will undoubtedly be left thinking "what the hell!?" but if you stick with it you'll reap the benefits .

  1. Inverted (From Wisdom To Hate)
  2. Condemned (Considered Dead)
  3. Stiff & Cold (Considered Dead)
  4. Behave Through Mythos (From Wisdom To Hate)
  5. Disincarnated (Considered Dead)
  6. Dormant Misery (The Erosion Of Sanity)
  7. Testimonial Ruins (From Wisdom To Hate)
  8. Inoculated Life (Considered Dead)
  9. Faceless Ones (Obscura)
  10. Lie Vie Est Prelude (Obscura)
  11. Nostalgia (Obscura)
  12. Obscura (Obscura)
  13. The Art Of Sombre Ecstasty (Obscura)
  14. The Carnal State (Obscura)

echolyn

echolyn (which the band itself always writes with a lowercase “e”) was formed in 1989 when guitarist Brett Kull and drummer Paul Ramsey, members of a recently split cover band called Narcissus, joined with keyboardist Chris Buzby to form a new band to focus on original songs. They were soon joined by fellow Narcissus veteran Ray Weston on vocals and bassist Jesse Reyes, and quickly began playing live and recording their eponymous debut album, which was released in 1991. During the recording of that album, Reyes was replaced on bass by Tom Hyatt.

While the band’s style has varied over the years, those influences have been consistently reflected in their music. Intricate guitar leads, unorthodox harmonic structures influenced by modern classical music, and complex contrapuntal vocal passages have remained significant aspects of echolyn’s musical sound.

The albums they recorded before their 1996 breakup sounded more like “classic” progressive rock, with layered keyboards and extended arrangements. Following their reformation, they have streamlined their style significantly, emphasizing strong, tightly constructed songwriting and more prominent rhythmic grooves, while maintaining much of the subtle sophistication that has caused their music to be labeled “progressive.”
