Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant is one of the most experimental bands of progressive rock genre, being put under eclectic prog on the prog archives.( Acquiring the Taste has credited at least 30 different instruments). The group's most popular line up consists up of Ray Shulman(bass), Derek Shulman(vocals), John Weather(drums), Gary Green(guitar), and Kerry Minnear(keyboards). Gentle Giant produce 12 albums before they disbanded in 1980.

Mike Patton: An Introduction

Many Rockbanders are only familiar with Mike Patton through Faith No More's inclusion of the song "Epic" in the game. This is very unfortunate because "Epic" was seen as a jokey, accidental hit, much like "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses. Mike has been making music for almost 30 years, and while FNM was a large part of his career, he has had as many musical projects as Scott Weiland has had rehab stints. I did exclude some of his more avant-garde, experimental stuff because i don't want to scare you away yet.... anyway, the songs:

General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners: "Get Up Punk!" (2005)
this is a more recent project, with Patton teaming up with NYC hip hop turntabilist collective X-Exutioners. the track here features Patton singing, but many tracks feature crazy samples and Patton doing his patented beat-boxing

Tomhawk: "Crow Dance" (2007)
Tomahawk is an alternative metal band also containing John Stanier (drums, Helmet, Battles) Duane Dennison (guitar, The Jesus Lizard), and Kevin Rutmanis (bass, The Melvins). They started as a straightforward (for Patton, at least) rock band, sounding very similar to the bands they were all in, in a 90's Amp Rep style, but have since moved more in the direction of their name, and have been incorporating Native American music into their style, as seen here.

Dillinger Escape Plan (feat. Mike Patton): "Good Dogs Do Bad Things" (2002)
Dillinger Escape Plan's crazy, all over the place, need-a-calculator-to follow extreme math metal combined with the vocal theatrics of Senior Patton reminds me of the good ol' days when the harlem globetrotters or batman would team up with scooby doo. There is only this EP, and a few live recordings (the DEP were between singers), but definitely worth a few listens.

Faith No More: The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, Everything's Ruined, Ashes to Ashes
Everything's Ruined represents the Jim Martin (original guitar player) era, that those who know "Epic", "Falling to Pieces" and "Midlife Crisis" and the later, sorta-alt-metal Faith No More, who also dabbled in swing, spanish ballads, and electronica, here represented by "Ashes to Ashes" and "The Gentle Art of Making Ememies (listen to the lyrics to this one; it will change your life)"

Lovage: Pit Stop (Take Me Home) (2001)
This concept album with Dan the Automator (Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Dr . Octagon) about getting down with your lady friend pairs Patton trading breathy vocals with Jen Charles (Elysian Fields) over trip hop and jazz samples. Lyrics are tongue-in-cheek, but the quality of the record is definitely serious. Put away your Barry White next time the mood arises, and put this on...
Mr. Bungle: Goodbye, Sober Day (1999)
This album is from the band of Patton's true love, and first band, that was around before, during, and after Faith No More. From death metal to free jazz to Beach Boys-esque music and vocal harmonies to ska to carnival music to deadly serious covers of Burt Bacharach, you never quite knew what to expect from this band that formed back in high school in the early 80s and made it to Warner Brothers records due to the strong sales of Patton's "other" band.

Peeping Tom: Sucker (feat. Norah Jones) (2006)
Peeping Tom is a Patton pop/rock/trip hop project featuring a revolving cast (Dan the Automator, Rahzel, Massive Attack, Kool Keith) creating what Patton called radio pop music in his skewed world. Listen to this cut featuring Norah Jones (yes, that one) getting dirty with Patton and wonder how they not only opened up for The Who in Philly, but also got booed off the stage (not exactly what The Who fans were expecting, I guess)

Electroclash Collection

An electronic genre that some would say favors style over substance, but has a lot of substance for all of that style. With the exception of Fischerspooner and perhaps Ladytron, very few of the mainstays of the genre are all that popular in the mass media awareness - which is a shame. Its a genre that offers a lot of creativity and a great energy. It fuses punk, new wave and electronic elements to form a sublime and twisted pleasure.

Eve 6 was an Alternative/Punk Rock band from California during the 90s most remembered for their songs Inside Out and Here's to the Night. Their self-titled debut album is easily one of the best of the 90s, but after that they went downhill and disbanded. They have a good driving punk sound and are great road music. Nevermore

The third installment of Mystlyfe's genre bending tour is the heaviest yet. Nevermore is a metal band that blends aspects from several sub-genres. Merging heavy de-tuned riffs, with unique and evolving vocals, and Jeff Loomis' signature sweep-picked solos, Nevermore is one of the most creative and talented metal bands. The Curious History of Will Oldham

Will Oldham, aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, aka Palace Music, aka Palace Brothers, aka aka aka... A fantastic musical talent that you should have heard of but tragically may not have. His sound changes even more often than his name so its really hard to classify. Instead I've tried to select a few songs from various points that will provide you a little scope.

1 - I Am A Cinematographer - Palace Brothers

Warbly and lo-fi, this was my very first exposure to the artist though I was tragically a little late to the party, not actually hearing this song until the later nineties. There's a subtle complexity to it but the voice here is striking - like in many of his songs. Its a dark song - again like so much of his work, but the folk elements are particularly strong here. LP: Days in the Wake

2 - The Brute Choir - Palace Music

Here we shift to a more americana/country-rock sound. Its perhaps a little subtle with a single track but the LP provides a lot more examples. A soft, sweet rambling filled with a bitterness characterizes this song in my mind. LP: Viva Las Blues

3 - Madeline-Mary - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

The choice of a song of the I See A Darkness LP tortured me. One of the best albums I've heard in my life and not a track that I find weak. Its received a lot of critical acclaim and made a fair number of lists. Its also the most depressing thing I've ever listened to in its entirety. There's a lot of grit from this choice and its almost a pageant. This particular track won out over a number of qualified applicants because... well its my personal favorite. LP: I See A Darkness

4 - Daniel - Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

I don't really like this release but I think its interesting and its part of the catalog. Now, individually I love both artists but the two coming together to perform covers is a real miss. I think a collaboration could have been brilliant - and it may suffer from that expectation. In any case this is basically an 'archival' inclusion but you, the listener, don't have to agree with my disappointment. LP: The Brave and the Bold

5 - Am I Demon - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

And to prove I don't hate covers (in fact I quite adore them), I'll finish the collection with Oldham performing a cover of a Danzig song. The beauty of this, is that it is not what I would consider a cross genre cover that you like because its so 'wacky'. I think its treated with the utmost respect and it creates a beautiful, different experience for a song rather than just giving you a laugh.

High on Fire

High on Fire is a stoner/doom metal band formed by Matt Pike after the legendary doom metal band Sleep split up. High on Fire plays faster than doom metal bands normally play, but that isn't a bad thing. They play what may be some of the best metal to have come out within the decade, combining the heaviness latent in doom with more energetic guitar solos and drumming styles and they pull it off awesomely.

Hungryfreak's Jazz Compilation

Need I explain jazz? It's many things. One of the most complex genres and one of the most free genres. Jazz generally involves brass, percussion and wind instruments with bass pulling them together, though that isn't to say there aren't exceptions. Jazz could have set compositions or complete improvisation, depending on the artists and songs. Sometimes it even wraps around a familiar tune and uses that as a main piece to build upon. The first white band signed to a black record label. They signed with Motown in 1969 and moved to their "Rare Earth" record label. They are a jam band known for their epic cover of the Temptation's "Get Ready." Tom Lehrer

Tom Lehrer was a mathematician and a piano player with a good wit about him. He wrote many hilarious satirical tunes in his day that, while simple, are fun. His great vocabulary and good piano playing fuel his parodies of various topics including government, religion and even other well-known tunes and styles. Some of his topics may be a bit irrelevant to the era, but they are fun nonetheless (though knowledge of the era doesn't hurt).

Yes

Yes is among Rush, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Jethro Tull as being the best know progressive rock groups of all time. The group formed in London(Great Britain) in 1968. The most popular Yes line up was Jon Anderson(vocals), Chris Squire(bass), Steve Howe(guitar), Bill Bruford(drums), and Rick Wakeman(keyboards). Yes belongs to the symphonic group of prog, being influenced by Baroque and Classical periods of classic music. Vocal harmonies, long composures, and great technical ability with their instruments is typically(in a good way) what makes up Yes.

In this compilation I included a song from Yes debut up to Relayer. I tried to cover the epics, the standard Yes songs, and their amazing covers in this compilation.

Nektar

A German band comprised of Englishmen Roye Albrighton on guitars and vocals, Allan "Taff" Freeman on keyboards, Derek "Mo" Moore on a Rickenbacker bass, Ron Howden on drums, and Mick Brockett on lights, special effects and other miscellanea, back in 1969. Songwriting was always considered a group effort with Nektar, and they had a cult following until the release of the album Remember the Future in (the magical year of) 1973. Going fairly silent after releasing Magic Is A Child in 1977, they regrouped in 2002 to headline NEARfest. They have been compared to Gentle Giant at times for their overall sound and style. Nektar could've been a major band but didn't become extremely popular until the end of progressive rock's golden era.

Aliotta-Haynes-Jeremiah

A Chicago based Trio consisting of bassist Mitch Aliotta, pianist John Jeremiah and guitarist Skip Haynes (and on the debut drummer Ted Aliotta). They had a moderate hit in 1971 with Lake Shore Drive. The song was a tribute to the famous lakefront road in Chicago, but its initials L.S.D. make the song have a double meaning. The album of the same name celebrated it's 25th Anniversary in 1996. There songs go from soft and gentle (For Eddy, Snow Queen), to loud and fast (Lake Shore Drive, Midnight Plane to Nairobi), to just silly (Uppers and Downers, Beam Me Up Scotty). Triumvirat

A German Progressive Rock band from Cologne, Germany formed in 1969. They have been considered the "German ELP." They were heavily influenced by The Nice and ELP. They broke up in 1980 after numerous lineup changes. Their biggest albums were Illusions On A Double Dimple and Spartacus.

Cynic

Cynic is a highly acclaimed and musically amazing band. Combining irregular time signatures, a mixture of robotic and death growl vocals, amazing instrumental work and philosophical lyrics, Cynic is a rare type of metal that transcends the title of progressive metal and can only be described as jazz metal. They have only released one album to date, Focus, and are planning on releasing a second by the end of the year.

The Protomen

They are your heroes. They are your hope. They are... The Protomen. Released in 2006, the self-titled debut album takes the tale of videogame hero Megaman and turns it into a rock opera featuring themes of the dark side of being a hero, keeping hope in a time where it is not allowed, and a city that won't fight for itself. These songs are not covers of 8-bit tunes, but original pieces built around a masterfully crafted story. If there ever was a band that deserves more credit than it receives, that band would be The Protomen.

Those who know me from the Rock Band forums may know that I'm a pretty stubborn "classics-only" guy, but the Protomen gave me hope that there is still worthy music being made. Listen to it. Love it. Join the resistance.

Part of the Canterbury Scene of Progressive Rock. Have released 14 albums, and had a few moderate hits (ie: Lady Fantasy, Rhayader Goes to Town). Their biggest albums were 1974's Mirage and 1975's The Snow Goose. Their lineup has changed many times, leading to several different sounds, from long, soft songs to shorter and even some heavier soundings songs.

Atomic Roooster

Atomic Rooster was an English Progressive Rock band that was formed by ex-Crazy World of Arthur Brown members (Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer). They were formed in 1969 and their debut album was Atomic Roooster released in 1970. Though the band would continue on afterwards, this was their only album with this distinct sound, having very little guitar edge to the songs, mostly being organ, drums, and bass. Carl Palmer would leave this group while they started working on their second albums o he could join Keith Emerson and Greg Lake with their progressive rock supergroup project ELP.

Egg, one of the many bands of the Canterbury Scene.

Egg consisted of Dave Stewart(keyboards), Mont Campbell(bass,vocals), and Clive Brooks on drums. Although Egg originated in London, they are often associated with Canterbury progressive rock scene. The group uses a lot odd time signatures in their work. Highlights of this style is shown in Enneagram and Contrasong. The group produced three studio albums in this line up until eventual their departure from the group in 1974.

Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep was one of the earliest Progressive Metal bands. Their debut Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble was released in 1970, and would continue throughout the 70s with fantasy themes on their albums. Their biggest success would come in 1972 when the albums Demons & Wizards and The Magician's Birthday would be released.

Uriah Heep has only kept one consistent member throughout their lineup, Mick Box, who is the lead guitarists. Though from 1986-2007 their lineup did remain unchanged. Their latest release was Wake The Sleeper in 2008.

Though they generally keep a heavier sound, some of their songs are lighter and some even acoustic, such as Lady In Black, The Wizard, and July Morning. Their biggest hits are Easy Livin' and Stealin'.

Iron Maiden is easily one of the most influential and recognizable Metal bands, Iron Maiden has influenced near every thrash metal band to date (Including the Big 4 in thrash). They feature relentless guitar riffs, complex drum beats, and a galloping bass-line. All while Bruce Dickinson belts out lyrics at an operatic quality. Known For such hits as “The Trooper”, “Number of the Beast”, and “Run to The Hills”, the band continues to impress. Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder was born on May 13, 1950. He started playing piano at the age of 7 and by the time he was 10 had mastered the harmonica and drums as well. Wonder signed with Motown Records at the age of 12 and learned how to play bass during his early years there. He has recorded more than 30 top ten hits, won 26 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Song and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. He has been permanently blind since childhood and still continues to record and perform for the Motown label.

Post-Rock Compilation #1

Post-Rock is a genre of alternative rock characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre and chord progressions that are not found in rock tradition. Simply put, it is the use of 'rock instrumentation' for non-rock purposes. Practitioners of the genre's style typically produce instrumental music. The post-rock sound incorporates characteristics from a variety of musical genres, including ambient, jazz, electronica, and experimental. The traditional method of power chords is replaced with timbre and texture for guitar-play while the song and voice is abandoned by its ambience.
