Dogmatics

A Boston-based alternative band, the Dogmatics never saw any significant or even minor success. They only released 2 albums on Homestead, and one self-released single.

The band was formed by brotehrs Peter (vocals) and Paul (bass) O'Halloran, and lifelong friend Jerry Lehane (guitar), as well as 2 different drummers in their five year career, Tommy Long the most notable as he played on all of the bands released material.

While the band had some influence over the Boston alternative scene, their career was cut short when Paul died in a motorcycle accident. The band broke-up, and became all but forgotten over the years.

They could be characterized by their strong wit, introspective lyrics, and noted rockabilly and hardcore punk influences. Here's a track listing for the mix:

1. Sister Serena
2. Mtv O.D.
3. King Size Cigarette
4. Gimme the Shakes
5. Pussy Whipped
6. Teenage Lament
7. Saturday Night Again
8. Drinking By the Pool
9. Thayer St.
10. Tell Me
11. Rockabilly Ramble
12. Sex Bomb

Post-Punk Mix

Becoming the first major spin-off from punk, post-punk was more experimental in nature than it's predecessor. For a few years, the terms new wave and post-punk were semi-interchangeable, but both developed into their own unique style, though there was some overlap. The first bands that could be described as definitively post-punk in sound were bands like Television, Magazine, and The Pop Group. Other bands that were once part of the movement headed for the more commercial friendly new wave sound, like Talking Heads and Devo. All of these bands laid the groundwork for alternative rock, and many of them were later considered to be the first alt. groups.

Here's a track listing:
1. Gimme the Shakes by Dogmatics
2. Transmission by Joy Division
3. Definitive Gaze by Magazine
4. Blow Daddy-O by Pere Ubu
5. Swamp Thing by The Chameleons
6. Elizabeth Montgomery's Face by The Embarrassment
7. Loveless Love by The Feelies
8. She Is Beyond Good and Evil by The Pop Group
9. Old Pervert by The Soft Boys
10. Descent Into Hell by Volcano Suns

Gorguts compliation.

"Gorguts brought the initial phases of death metal toward a greater realization of melodic structuring before it was conventional to do so renovate the genre again with the innovation of a new form of chaotic yet lucid composition.

Gorguts is avant-garde/technical metal band from Quebec, a city that brought us other death metal ledgends Cryptopsy and progressive thrashers Voivod. Although Gorguts started out as old school death metal act they would later, tired of the cliche and cookie cutter death metal acts at the time evolve into a highly technical, highly avant-garde and dissonant technincal metal with a completly unique style that fused the death/jazz fusion of Atheist and Cynic with Suffocation and Cryptopsy with free jazz and composers like Penderecki.

In 1998 Gorguts released their magnum opus,
Obscura.
A metal album like no other. Labeled as the Trout Mask Relipca of death metal due to its "High speed counterpoint baffling chord structures buttressed by recursion, tonal centering through droning cyclic melted sound emergence, ragged fugues of dissonant melodies converging toward oblivion, tempos shifting through the elements of one another into each other, cyclic two-hit metal percussive structures and free-form progressive harmonic jamming are packed into these songs as overhead to the essence of each, which no matter how aesthetically different it appears at first listen reveals itself as fundamental Gorguts when the emergent melody encoded within begins to find form in the various aspects of its decomposition showcased by differentiation structures creating a vast tonal motion in their evolutionary journey from the point of chaos to clarity. The same voice that crafted the strength within the sturdy structures of death metal on two previous albums speaks through the chaos on this release with a newfound power in its ability to fuse what to most will seem like a salad of riffs juxtaposed for their difference rather than similarity."

In 2001 Gorguts released
From Widsom To Hate. Still avant-garde but more "straight-forward" than Obscura it earned Gorguts more fans with your average death-metaller but was undoubtedly a step down from Obscura. This compilation contains some of my favourite Gorguts tracks. I recommend the Obscura tracks and "Inverted"listen if you dare, at first you will undoubtedly be left thinking "what the hell!?" but if you stick with it you'll reap the benefits .

  1. Inverted (From Wisdom To Hate)
  2. Condemned (Considered Dead)
  3. Stiff & Cold (Considered Dead)
  4. Behave Through Mythos (From Wisdom To Hate)
  5. Disincarnated (Considered Dead)
  6. Dormant Misery (The Erosion Of Sanity)
  7. Testimonial Ruins (From Wisdom To Hate)
  8. Inoculated Life (Considered Dead)
  9. Faceless Ones (Obscura)
  10. Lie Vie Est Prelude (Obscura)
  11. Nostalgia (Obscura)
  12. Obscura (Obscura)
  13. The Art Of Sombre Ecstasty (Obscura)
  14. The Carnal State (Obscura)

The Letter E was a short lived instrumental rock band from New York City. Their members included a former member of Lungfish, Pullman, and even a former Blue Man. They only released two records, an EP and an LP. Released in 2000, No. 5ive Longplayer is a criminally unnoticed album among it's Math and Post Rock peers.

echolyn

echolyn (which the band itself always writes with a lowercase “e”) was formed in 1989 when guitarist Brett Kull and drummer Paul Ramsey, members of a recently split cover band called Narcissus, joined with keyboardist Chris Buzby to form a new band to focus on original songs. They were soon joined by fellow Narcissus veteran Ray Weston on vocals and bassist Jesse Reyes, and quickly began playing live and recording their eponymous debut album, which was released in 1991. During the recording of that album, Reyes was replaced on bass by Tom Hyatt.

While the band’s style has varied over the years, those influences have been consistently reflected in their music. Intricate guitar leads, unorthodox harmonic structures influenced by modern classical music, and complex contrapuntal vocal passages have remained significant aspects of echolyn’s musical sound.

The albums they recorded before their 1996 breakup sounded more like “classic” progressive rock, with layered keyboards and extended arrangements. Following their reformation, they have streamlined their style significantly, emphasizing strong, tightly constructed songwriting and more prominent rhythmic grooves, while maintaining much of the subtle sophistication that has caused their music to be labeled “progressive.”

Tracklisting:
Disc One:
1. 67 Degrees (7:33)
2. Brittany (10:29)
3. Suffocating the Bloom (4:32)
4. As the World (6:59)

Introduction To The Flower Kings

As many people on the forums know I am a huge Flower Kings so I decided to make a good list to introduce people to the band

From last.fm:
The Flower Kings formed in 1993 by veteran guitarist Roine Stolt as a touring band to support his solo album The Flower King, the band stayed together after the tour and has gone on to become one of the most prolific studio recording units in rock music of their era. In ten years it has released nearly 18 hours of music

Roine Stolt has written the vast majority of the material the band has recorded, withThomas Bodin contributing most of the rest. The music is perhaps best described as "symphonic," bearing a strong resemblance in many instances to that of Yes, and yet there are also hints of strong influence from the jazz fusion genre. The band’s lyrics are almost uniformly positive, affirming such values as love, peace, and spirituality.

Some of these are epics none are full albums though

Blood of the Tyrant

Mystlyfe's genre-blender packs return after quite a hiatus.

Take one serving Mastodon. Add one half-cup of distorted sludge metal guitar. Strain out clean vocals. Mix in a handful of Baroness. Stir well. Garnish with a splash of Pantera's southern kick. Congratulations, you've made Blood of the Tyrant.

The Chicago four-piece is part of a trend of progressive sludge-like bands that is dominating a large chunk of musical real estate these days. While closest to Sludge, Blood of the Tyrant incorporates elements of thrash, doom, prog, and hardcore to form their own brand of metal.

BotT displays very impressive and developed song-writing for an unsigned band, penning flowing epics that move naturally from verse-to-verse and create a powerful impact. Some tricks and techniques are tried and true, but the ultimate product doesn't sound stale, and keeps the listener engaged.

The Melvins were many things. Though their music is mostly rooted in sludge metal, they never stuck to a single genre and moved in between a selection from doom derivatives to alternative to the hardcore punk they had since the beginning and more. They are best known as the godfathers of grunge, but also had some influence over sludge and drone metal.

Atheist

Atheist was among the elite of the Tampa Bay death metal scene. Generally mentioned in the same breath as Death and Cynic, they still manage to remain one of the most unique metal acts ever. Featuring a particularly strong rhythm section, Atheist managed to incorporate elements of jazz and even latin music into their death metal outfit. After splitting up for around 15 years, they have finally reformed and plan to release a new album featuring a cover of Rush's "YYZ".

Lolicat's Femmepunk Compilation

A selection of a few of my favourite female-fronted punk bands. Not all are strictly feminist, and there's a nice enough mix of anracho-punk (Crass), Riot Grrrl (Bikini Kill, Excuse 17), queercore (Team Dresch, Sleater-Kinney) and plain old punk rock (The Gits, Patti Smith). I haven't labelled them as an album in iTunes, sorry, but otherwise the labels are fine.

Track Listing:

1. Bratmobile, Shop for America
2. The Gits, Another Shot of Whiskey
3. Crass, Systematic Death
4. Bikini Kill, Carnival
5. Sleater-Kinney, Night Light
6. Excuse 17, We're the Seniors (And We Rule the School)
7. Patti Smith, Ask the Angels
8. Team Dresch, 107
9. Team Dresch, Don't Try Suicide

glassjaw

Q: What do you get when you mix Mike Patton, Frank Zappa, Japanese monster movies, debilitating diseases, backstabbing acquaintances , Groovy Hardcore and 4 (or 5) guys from Long Island?

A: {cheesy, i know...} the one and only Glassjaw/

Glassjaw did most of their damage around the turn of the millenia, releasing extremely popular EPs before getting signed by Roadrunner and producing their first full length with producer Ross Robinson. Their 2 albums Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence and Worship and Tribute go from spacy to extremely heavy to upbeat hardcore to experimental from song to song. Videos were made, albums were sold, but given the serious disagreement with Roadrunner, the band left the label and now encourages fans to download them for free.

Eccentric Frontman Daryl Palumbo freespirits his way from project to project, including mod rock Head Automatica, crust/grind/experimental United Nations, and electronic House of Blow on top of Glassjaw duties, so the band has been dormant for awhile, with intermittant performances (which may or may not get cancelled due to Daryl's disease).

Unfortunately, many of today's post-hardcore bands have aped their sound, co-opting the tone while neglecting the sincerity and artistry found in Glassjaw's music.

Fortunately, they are preparing a new album, as evidenced by the brand new song, ""so You Think You're John Fucking Lennon"

This mix is composed of a cross-section of their material. check it out!

Llloyd Cole & the Commotions

Classic overlooked 80's artist. Their lead singer, Lloyd Cole, came from Derbyshire, a county in England, but the band itself came from Glasgow, Scotland. I found out about them through my dad, who in turn found out about them in the mid-80's when his sister was dating Lloyd Cole. Definitely worth a listen.

The Crawpuppies

The Crawpuppies are a rock band from Northwest Indiana. They are heavily influenced by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and the Rolling Stones. They have released one album, and one DVD, and during live concerts, play some kickass covers (some sounding damn near close to the originals), a new album is set to come out in early 2009.

Humble Pie

Humble Pie was a hard rockin blues-rock band that at one time featured Peter Frampton (but left to pursue a solo career, replaced by Clem Clempson ), and also one time Small Faces frontman Steve Marriott. Some great vocals, catchy bass lines, poundin drums, and sweet guitar licks lead to a great album, Smokin'!

Heres a few tracks from this hit album:
1. Hot 'n' Nasty
2. C'mon Everybody
3. 30 Days In the Hole
