Dogmatics

A Boston-based alternative band, the Dogmatics never saw any significant or even minor success. They only released 2 albums on Homestead, and one self-released single.

The band was formed by brotehrs Peter (vocals) and Paul (bass) O'Halloran, and lifelong friend Jerry Lehane (guitar), as well as 2 different drummers in their five year career, Tommy Long the most notable as he played on all of the bands released material.

While the band had some influence over the Boston alternative scene, their career was cut short when Paul died in a motorcycle accident. The band broke-up, and became all but forgotten over the years.

They could be characterized by their strong wit, introspective lyrics, and noted rockabilly and hardcore punk influences. Here's a track listing for the mix:

Post-Punk Mix

Becoming the first major spin-off from punk, post-punk was more experimental in nature than it's predecessor. For a few years, the terms new wave and post-punk were semi-interchangeable, but both developed into their own unique style, though there was some overlap. The first bands that could be described as definitively post-punk in sound were bands like Television, Magazine, and The Pop Group. Other bands that were once part of the movement headed for the more commercial friendly new wave sound, like Talking Heads and Devo. All of these bands laid the groundwork for alternative rock, and many of them were later considered to be the first alt. groups.

Hüsker Dü and Amebix

Hüsker Dü was an influential alternative rock band, which began as a hardcore punk band, from Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, United States, active from 1979 to 1987 and comprising guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bass guitarist Greg Norton, and drummer Grant Hart. Mould and Hart split the songwriting duties. Hüsker Dü was never widely popular, but had an impact much larger than sales would indicate. “Husker Du” is Danish/Norwegian for “Do You Remember,” a popular children’s game. Hüsker Dü first gained notice as a punk band with thrashing tempos and screamed vocals, but also with a melodic, soulful edge that became more pronounced in the band’s mid-career, as they drifted away from their early sound.

Amebix, formed in 1978, was an important UK punk band that many consider to have started the subgenre “crust punk”, by mixing heavy metal with hardcore punk. They established crust as being separate from thrash metal by mixing punk music with metal tempos, as opposed to thrash bands’ mixing of metal music with punk tempos. Influential in the anarcho-punk genre, Amebix’ song “No Gods, No Masters” became a slogan for the movement worldwide. They were originally called The Band With No Name, and shared a squat in Bristol for part of their career. Their music, heavily influenced by Motörhead (and to a lesser extent Lemmy-era Hawkwind), Black Sabbath and early Killing Joke, combined with an ethos and worldview akin to Crass, represented their non-traditional lifestyles.

Bush Tetras & The dB's

Bush Tetras were a rock band from New York City, popular in the New York club scene in the early 1980s but never achieving much mainstream success. Their music, sometimes classified under "rare beats", combined funk rhythms and dissonant rock-guitar riffs.
Lead guitarist Pat Place and vocalist Cynthia Sley produced the most distinctive aspects of the Tetras sound. Place's guitar lines were rhythmic and distortion-filled. She had been the original guitarist and one of the founding members of the No Wave band The Contortions. With the Bush Tetras, Pat continued to pursue some of the musical ideas she had explored in that band, although her distinctive slide guitar is absent from many of the Tetras songs. Sley's vocals were half-spoken, half-sung. In songs like "Too Many Creeps" and "You Can't Be Funky," she repeated simple phrases over and over again, creating a hypnotic monotony similar to Place's guitar rhythms.

Along with Let’s Active, the dB’s defined the Southern power pop/jangle pop movement of the early to mid-’80s. The band’s music was a quirky blend of smart pop and psychedelia crossed with the more experimental side of new wave. Though they never received widespread recognition outside of critical acclaim, they provided a key link between Big Star and ’80s alternative guitar acts such as R.E.M.

Alcest & Amesoeurs Mix

Alcest is a musical project from Avignon, France. Beginning as a raw black metal act in 1999, Alcest later became a vessel for Neige's "memories of another world" as the band evolved into his solo-project. While Alcest still retains some black metal roots, the music now draws more comparison to other genres such as shoegaze and post-rock.

During Summer 2004, Amesoeurs was formed by Neige, Audrey Sylvain, and Fursy Teyssier with the purpose of creating music that reflects the dark side of the industrial era and modern civilization.
Organic, introspective black metal from France, led by Neige (also in Alcest, Peste Noire, Mortifera, etc.), the music combines the early/mid-90’s black metal sound with moments of post-punk and female vocals.

If it isn't stiff....

Stiff records was a brilliant record studio that flickered in and out of the world. Featuring a primarily punk and new wave featured lineup, they had some amazing artists such as Elvis Costello, The Damned, The Pogues, Madness and Motorhead for periods of time. But this selection is some of their lesser known or more often forgotten bands.

Afterstasis' No Wave Mix #1

"In many ways, No Wave is not a clearly definable musical genre with consistent features. Various groups drew on such disparate styles as funk, jazz, blues, punk rock, avant garde, and experimental. There are, however, some elements common to most No Wave music, such as abrasive atonal sounds, repetitive driving rhythms, and a tendency to emphasize musical texture over melody - typical of the early downtown music of La Monte Young. No Wave lyrics often focused on nihilism and confrontation."

The Curious History of Will Oldham

Will Oldham, aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, aka Palace Music, aka Palace Brothers, aka aka aka... A fantastic musical talent that you should have heard of but tragically may not have. His sound changes even more often than his name so its really hard to classify. Instead I've tried to select a few songs from various points that will provide you a little scope.

1 - I Am A Cinematographer - Palace Brothers

Warbly and lo-fi, this was my very first exposure to the artist though I was tragically a little late to the party, not actually hearing this song until the later nineties. There's a subtle complexity to it but the voice here is striking - like in many of his songs. Its a dark song - again like so much of his work, but the folk elements are particularly strong here. LP: Days in the Wake

2 - The Brute Choir - Palace Music

Here we shift to a more americana/country-rock sound. Its perhaps a little subtle with a single track but the LP provides a lot more examples. A soft, sweet rambling filled with a bitterness characterizes this song in my mind. LP: Viva Las Blues

3 - Madeline-Mary - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

The choice of a song of the I See A Darkness LP tortured me. One of the best albums I've heard in my life and not a track that I find weak. Its received a lot of critical acclaim and made a fair number of lists. Its also the most depressing thing I've ever listened to in its entirety. There's a lot of grit from this choice and its almost a pageant. This particular track won out over a number of qualified applicants because... well its my personal favorite. LP: I See A Darkness

4 - Daniel - Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

I don't really like this release but I think its interesting and its part of the catalog. Now, individually I love both artists but the two coming together to perform covers is a real miss. I think a collaboration could have been brilliant - and it may suffer from that expectation. In any case this is basically an 'archival' inclusion but you, the listener, don't have to agree with my disappointment. LP: The Brave and the Bold

5 - Am I Demon - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

And to prove I don't hate covers (in fact I quite adore them), I'll finish the collection with Oldham performing a cover of a Danzig song. The beauty of this, is that it is not what I would consider a cross genre cover that you like because its so 'wacky'. I think its treated with the utmost respect and it creates a beautiful, different experience for a song rather than just giving you a laugh.
